The Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog Band

The Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog Band

The Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog Band are one of the lesser known extravagances of the 60’s British music scene. I first heard this band as a student in London in the early 90’s. My mate was raving about this band that sounded like some Fairground music attraction. A veritable kaleidoscope of sounds, with lyrics straight out of a Monty Python sketch. Anyone who digs Bonzo on the first attempt must be slightly unhinged. The music is so far fetched and all over the place, it requires persistence and a strong sense of humour. But once you’ve got it, you’re in for a great ride. The 3 CD Cornology is the best way to immerse yourself in this madness. Headphones are essential if you live in a house with any other family members or friends. They will not appreciate this one. They will question your sensibilities.....

The Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog Band Many of the tracks fuse a unique talking narrative and an orchestral like sound comprising most musical instruments known to man. Bells, whistles, banjos, parrots, you name it. “The Intro and the Outro” is a great example, as each instrument is introduced overlapping with the posh sounding one and only Vivian Stanshall. (John Peel described him as, “the court jester of the underground rock scene in the 1960’s) “Shirt” needs to be heard to be believed, its just stupid. Mr. Slater’s Parrot is a laugh and a half. Yet there are also some seriously rockin tracks, the likes of: Keynsham, What do you do?, Urban Spaceman and Mr. Apollo. Urban Spaceman was a Top 5 hit in 1968.

If you like Bonzo then you should check out the movie “The Rutles”. Featuring cameo appearances from the likes of George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, and Paul Simon. This film was the brainchild of Eric Idle (Monty’s capable song writer) and Niel Innes (Bonzo). At heart it is a parody of the Beatles, but all done in the best possible taste. The soundtrack is also worth a listen, all the tracks are funny variations of Beatles Hits.
